A WORKED EXAMPLE

Three people, a $79.75 subtotal, 8.5% tax and a 20% tip. The tax is $6.78 and the tip is $15.95, so the bill is $102.48. Alex ordered $34 — that's 42.6% of the subtotal, so Alex owes 42.6% of $102.48, or $43.68. Not $34 plus an even third of the extras, which would have quietly overcharged the person who just had a salad.

How do you split a bill unevenly?

Work out each person's share of the subtotal first, then add tax and tip proportionally to what each person ordered. This calculator does that: enter each person's order and it spreads tax and tip in proportion.

Do you tip on tax?

In the US the common convention is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Tipping on the post-tax total is also normal and slightly more generous. This calculator lets you choose.

How much should each person tip when orders differ?

In proportion to what they ordered. If your order is 30% of the subtotal, you cover 30% of the tip and 30% of the tax. Splitting the tip evenly while splitting the food unevenly is a common source of arguments.
